Thinking about switching your Nassau grievance company?

You may be able to use a different representative for a new assessment roll. The important part is knowing whether anyone is already authorized, or has already filed, for the year you are trying to challenge.

Do not sign a second authorization before checking your current status.

Nassau County warns homeowners not to sign duplicate authorizations. Where two representatives are authorized for the same property and roll, the application can be denied — and the person who loses the appeal is you, not either firm.

Five things to establish, in order.

  1. Check which assessment roll your agreement covers

Under Assessment Review Commission Rule 4.9 an authorization is valid for one tentative assessment roll only. An agreement you signed for a previous roll does not carry forward to this one on its own — but your firm may have taken a fresh authorization from you since, so check the dates rather than assuming.

  2. Find out whether an application is already pending

If a firm has already filed for you on the current roll, you are not choosing between two firms — you have a live application with a representative attached. That changes which of the steps below applies to you, so establish it before doing anything else.

  3. Read the termination terms in your own agreement

Notice periods, how cancellation must be delivered, and what is owed if a reduction has already been obtained all vary between firms. We can tell you what we need in order to accept a new authorization; we cannot advise you on another provider’s contract.

  4. If a case is already pending, it takes a signed consent

Changing representative on a live application is done by a consent to change representation, filed with ARC. It must be signed by every party, your signature has to be notarized, and each tax year has to be named individually — ARC does not accept “all pending years”. If two firms have both already filed for the same parcel, the duplicate has to be withdrawn rather than settled.

  5. Once you are clear, check your property

When you know which roll you are free for and that nothing is pending, you can see what a filing would be worth before committing to anything.

A plain cancellation email

Send it however your agreement requires. The three confirmations it asks for are the ones that matter: that you are terminated, whether anything is already filed, and what they consider owed.

Subject: Termination of representation — [your property address]

To whom it may concern,

I am writing to terminate your representation of me in connection with the property
tax assessment of [your property address], Nassau County, effective immediately.

Please confirm in writing:
  1. That the representation has been terminated.
  2. Whether any application has been filed on my behalf for the 2028/29 assessment roll,
and if so its current status.
  3. Any amount you consider outstanding, with the basis for it.

Please also confirm that you will take no further action on my behalf.
